Ingredients

For the tostadas:

1 pound lean ground beef
1/3 cup water
3 tablespoons taco seasoning
1 1/2 cups refried beans
8 tostada shells or corn tortillas
olive oil, optional, to taste
salt, optional, to taste

For the optional toppings:

2 cups iceberg lettuce, finely shredded
1 cup tomatoes, diced
2 cups Mexican cheese blend, shredded
olives, to taste
jalapeños, to taste
cilantro, to taste
red onions, to taste, diced

Directions

Step 1 – Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F if using tostada shells or 375 degrees F if using the corn tortillas.

Step 2 – In a large skillet, cook the beef while crumbling until no longer pink, about 7-10 minutes.

Step 3 – Carefully drain the excess fat from the skillet.

Step 4 – Add the water and the taco seasoning to the cooked meat.

Step 5 – Simmer the meat mixture until thickened, about 5 minutes.

Step 6 – While the meat is cooking, heat the refried beans in the microwave or on the stovetop until heated through.

Step 7 – Place the tostada shells on a baking sheet and bake until warm and fragrant, about 5 minutes. If using corn tortillas, brush each side of the tortilla with olive oil and sprinkle it generously with salt. Bake the seasoned tortillas for 4 minutes and then flip. Continue baking until browned and crisp, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 8 – Carefully transfer the warmed shells from the oven.

Step 9 – Spoon the heated refried beans onto the shells followed by the meat.

Step 10 – Top the meat with your preferred toppings.

Step 11 – Serve.
