A key member of the University of Houston Men’s Basketball coaching staff, Quannas White, was elevated to associate head coach, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson announced Friday.
“We are thrilled to announce that Quannas has been promoted to associate head coach. I have watched his passion and his work ethic and seen the relationships he has built with our kids. He has made a huge impact in our program from day one, whether it is his teaching, his coaching or his positive attitude,” said Sampson, who begins his 10th season with the Cougars in 2023-24. “You want to reward people who have been loyal and made a commitment to the program. This is a way we could make a commitment to Quannas.”
“It was a privilege to play for Coach Sampson, and it’s been a privilege to work beside him for the last six seasons. What we have been able to accomplish here has been great. I am really excited about being with this program and trying to continue to help him win games,” White said. “I just try to pour everything I can into these kids every day and teach these guys everything I have learned.”
White came to Houston for the 2017-18 season after serving at WKU. Since joining the Cougars, he has helped lead Houston to a 176-34 overall record with five NCAA Tournament appearances – including the 2021 NCAA Final Four – three American Athletic Conference regular-season titles and back-to-back American Athletic Conference tournament crowns in 2021 and 2022.
Since his arrival, the Cougars have finished among the Top 25 in both final national polls each season with Top 10 showings in each of the last three years, including a #2 ranking in the final 2022-23 Associated Press poll.
Working with the Houston backcourt, Cougar guards have earned 12 All-American Athletic Conference honors with two conference Players of the Year in Quentin Grimes (2020-21) and Marcus Sasser (2022-23) and two Defensive Players of the Year in DeJon Jarreau (2020-21) and Jamal Shead (2022-23) and nine All-Tournament Team members.
Most recently, the Cougars posted a 33-4 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 or farther for the fourth consecutive season in 2022-23. Houston claimed its fourth American Athletic Conference regular-season title in the last five years and ranked among the Top-Six leaders in both national polls throughout the year.
