Some say the Republicans are at it again and this time they are coming for the LGBTQIA community. The Texas Senate approved two bills Wednesday restricting drag activities where kids are in proximity.

The bills, co-authored Republican Texas Sen. Bryan Hughes and Lois Kolkhorst, are reportedly meant to protect children from sexually explicit performances.

According to the Texas Tribune, Senate Bill 1601 would defund public libraries where drag queens are allowed to read to children, and Senate Bill 12 bars kids from drag shows if the performances are overly lewd and lascivious.

The bills also stipulated that local Texas bars and eateries could risk being fined up to 10,000 if they host any drag events where children are present. This would greatly affect establishments in predominately gay areas that host family-friendly brunches and dinner theatre where drag performers serve as musical entertainment.

Drag Story Hour first started in 2015 by author and activist Michelle Tea in San Francisco with the goal of promoting reading and diversity. Popular events have become a modern way to teach children about the LGBTQIA community in a fun and safe environment.

Both bills now head to the House.
