Coleman was born in Atlanta, Texas in 1892 as the tenth child out of 13 total children. She was born to an African American mother and a Cherokee and African American father.

In 1921, Coleman became the first African American and Native American woman to earn an International Pilot’s License and the first Black woman to complete a public flight in 1922.

According to the United States Mint, the other women to be celebrated include Jovita Idar, a Mexican American journalist and activist, Edith Kanaka’ole, an indigenous Hawaiian composer, dancer and teacher, former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, and Maria Tallchief, a Native American woman who became America’s first prima ballerina.

“The range of accomplishments and experiences of these extraordinary women speak to the contributions women have always made in the history of our country,” said Mint Deputy Director Ventris C. Gibson. “I am proud that the Mint continues to connect America through coins by honoring these pioneering women and their groundbreaking contributions to our society.”
