The Vegan Vibez Festival held its third annual event in Houston on Juneteenth. This festival was my first real outing since this pandemic began and let me tell you…I was not disappointed. Whether you are vegan, vegan-curious, or non-vegan, this event had something for everybody.

For the past three years I have been an on and off vegan. From suddenly going cold-turkey and being vegan for an entire month straight, to barely lasting a week before succumbing to a rack of smoked baby back ribs, my journey to an animal-free lifestyle has not been an easy one. But the moment I sunk my teeth into Tacos A Go Go’s vegan ‘pastor’ taco, I was instantly motivated to try new vegan dishes.

I knew it would be hot, but the sun was absolutely ruthless. The only way to combat the unforgiving heat was through the many smoothie and juicery trucks at the festival. Smoothie Strong and The Hype Juicery had the best and most refreshing smoothies and acai bowls.

There was no shortage of small Black businesses to support at the festival. I spent wayyy more money than I was supposed to, but I am absolutely satisfied with all of my purchases. The shopping district included all natural soaps and perfumes, holistic ointments and crystals, Black art, clothing and jewelry, plants, and so much more. One of my favorite purchases was an organic and vegan room spray from Roots Holistic Wellness Co. made with mangosteen, acai berries, and green coconut. It even came with an earth-conscious business card that can be planted.

As for the entertainment, there was rollerskating, krumping, dougie-offs, and dance battles. I could have easily defeated everyone in the dance battle, but fear of a heat stroke prevented me from doing so. Even without my amazing dance skills, the battles were intense and featured amazing dancers and skaters.

I even got the chance to meet members of Houston’s very own roller derby team.
