Central Ohio’s Mekka Don released a new single and video on Tuesday titled, “Still Dope.” The single marks the return of the former Ohio State football player, turned artist, turned entrepreneur.

“When something’s in your heart, it kind of comes to you naturally, especially as a writer,” Mekka Don told ABC 6 News.

His newfound inspiration stemmed from recovering from surgery, personal trials, and the pandemic. Another big source of inspiration for the artist was the social justice movement, which encouraged him to make the meaningful track.

“It was an emotional process writing about it, because you know I was drawing on things that I’d read about in history books, things that I personally experienced and then also things that I was watching us go through right now at the same time,” he said.

While Mekka Don knows the messages in his music primarily speak to Black audiences, he sees the messages as something globally relatable.

“I think, globally, it means – if you’ve been through anything, but you’re still standing, you’re still dope,” he said.
