Martin Luther King Jr. Day has become synonymous with the legacy and memory of Dr. King but it’s also the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer and improve their communities.

In alignment with the spirit of MLK Day, the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Omicron Tau Omega Chapter, in partnership with Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Sigma Theta Sigma Chapter and Spring Independent School District, successfully hosted the community-driven event.  “We Are One – MLK Day of Service: A BEAR Necessities Drive and Packing Party,”

Local families from BEAR (BE A Resource Houston) received approximately 750 reusable drawstring bags with essential toiletries, including lotion, toothbrush, toothpaste, toothbrush holder, bar soap, soap holder or body wash, body spray, ChapStick or lip gloss, deodorant, inspirational card, socks (over 1,300 donated), hair care products for children of color (shampoo, conditioner, hair oils, and styling supplies), comb and brush set, and hand sanitizer.

BEAR is the only 501(c)(3) organization working with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) and Harris County Resources for Children and Adults that offers unique programs – that provide not only the basic needs of children recently uprooted, but also supportive services that provide comfort, dignity, and celebration of successes that propel the child toward a successful future – for abused and neglected children.

The collaboration with BEAR Houston underscores the commitment of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Omicron Tau Omega Chapter, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Sigma Theta Sigma Chapter, and Spring Independent School District to making a positive impact in the community.

Alpha Kapa Alpha Omicron Tau Omega Chapter President, Yoshida J. Kirkwood expressed gratitude to chapter members, volunteers, and community supporters for their dedication and donations that contributed to the success of this initiative.

“We acknowledge the importance of collaborating with significant community organizations to accomplish our mission of serving all humanity and safeguarding the well-being of children in the north Houston area and beyond. I express gratitude to our chapter members, volunteers, and community supporters for their dedication and contributions, which will contribute to the success of this initiative,” said Kirkwood.

Mandele Davis, a dedicated member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Omicron Tau Omega chapter and the event chair, voiced tearful gratitude for the overwhelming community support.

“Alpha Kappa Alpha women are passionate about service, and we are even more passionate about positively impacting the lives of children. Our partnership with BEAR enables our chapter to engage in sustainable service to children in Harris County. This project allows us to see the immediate impact on those we serve,” said Davis.
