After taking an extended medical leave in August due to a diagnosis of clinical depression, Harris County Judge Hidalgo is officially back on the job.

Her return to work Monday was marked by engaging with staff briefings and responding to messages from constituents, and she is also gearing up for the next Commissioners Court, scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 10.

In a statement, Hidalgo expressed her appreciation for the support she received during her absence.

Highlighting the importance of mental health, she compared taking time off for mental illness to recovering from a physical ailment.

She also expressed hope that her experience would motivate others to seek help if needed.

While many people are applauding her, Hidalgo’s absence has sparked legal actions.

Over the weekend, a lawsuit was filed by five individuals aiming to remove her from office.

The lawsuit specifically cites her absence from public office since July 27, alleging that Hidalgo abandoned her role and responsibilities as Harris County Judge.
