The memorial segment of the Grammys is a touching one, and allows us to remember and honor icons who have changed and shaped their respective industries before their death. Among honored artists such as DMX, Young Dolph, Betty Davis, and Shock G, Virgil Abloh, the boundary-breaking designer stood out, and not for the most pleasant of reasons.

Fans of the late designer quickly noticed the label given to Abloh during the memorial: “Hip Hop Fashion Designer”, and have since expressed their disdain for the label, claiming it pigeonholed the designer.

Abloh’s untimely death came last November, from a long and private battle with a rare type of cancer that ended his life at the age of 41.

Abloh founded the luxury fashion label Off-White, which frequently collaborated with big names such as Nike, Ikea, Kith, Takashi Murakami, Heron Preston, Levi’s, Moncler and Jimmy Choo and more. Abloh also served as the artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear, and designed album covers for Jay Z, Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Pop Smoke, Lil Uzi, and A$AP Rocky.

Though Abloh’s creativity was widely accepted and revered within the Hip-Hop community, his influence stretched so much further than that, and many felt that the grammy’s missed the opportunity to acknowledge his influence.
