As families prepared for the start of a new school year, the Harris County Clerk’s Office helped parents check one important item off their back-to-school checklist by opening all 10 of its annex locations for a countywide birth certificate event.

The Sixth Annual Back-to-School Birth Certificate Event was held Saturday, Aug. 1, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., providing eligible Texans with convenient weekend access to obtain certified birth certificates ahead of the first day of school. This marked the first year all 10 Harris County Clerk annex offices participated in the annual event, expanding access for families across Harris County.

Since launching the initiative in 2021, the annual event has helped hundreds of families obtain certified birth certificates—an essential document often required for school enrollment and other important services. This year’s countywide expansion gave families across Harris County even greater access to the vital records they needed before the school year begins.

“By opening all 10 annex locations on a Saturday, we’re making it easier for families across Harris County to check one more item off their to-do list,” Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth said. “We’re proud to help hardworking parents with busy schedules access the documents they need before the school year begins.”

Individuals born in Texas who are were eligible to request a certified birth certificate—including the person named on the record, an immediate family member or a legal guardian—were able to obtain a copy during the event. Applicants were required to present a valid government-issued photo ID, complete the required application and pay the $23 fee.

Families who were unable to attend may still request birth certificates online, by mail or in person during regular business hours through the Harris County Clerk’s Office.
