Under the wide Houston sky at Tom Bass Regional Park III, families, community leaders, advocates, artists and longtime supporters gathered on Memorial Day for the 2nd Annual “A Conversation With George” event, a heartfelt community gathering created to honor the life, humanity and lasting legacy of George Floyd.

 The free community event was presented by Kay Davis in the Community, and Commissioner Rodney Ellis Office.

Five years after George Floyd’s death forced the world to confront painful questions about policing, justice, and humanity, the Houston gathering served as a reminder that his story is not just part of national history. It is deeply personal for his hometown, Houston, TX, which helped shape him.

The day opened with a balloon release, giving attendees a quiet moment to pause, look upward, and honor George Floyd’s memory together. The gesture carried the weight of grief, but it also reflected something bigger: a community still committed to saying his name with dignity, purpose, and love.

Throughout the day, the park was filled with the sound of music, spoken word and fellowship, followed by a community and justice forum. Speakers and attendees reflected on what it means to keep fighting for justice while also building stronger, more connected communities. Guests also enjoyed live performances, food, vendors and family-friendly moments with performances by Abosstress, Dr. Bukky Rojugbokan, and Jelando Johnson and Band.

“This event was about more than remembering George Floyd, it was about continuing the conversation his life and tragic passing sparked across Houston, the nation, and the world,” said Dannette Davis, founder of Kay Davis in the Community. “We are grateful to every speaker, performer, vendor, volunteer, sponsor, partner, and community member who helped make this day possible. Their presence and support helped honor the memory and continue the movement.”
