Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, has taken out a full-page advertisement in The Wall Street Journal apologizing to the Jewish and Black communities for his previous comments.

In the open letter, titled “To Those I’ve Hurt,” Ye wrote that he was injured in a 2002 car crash that “broke my jaw” and damaged the right frontal lobe of his brain. He said the internal injury went unrecognized until 2023 and that the missed diagnosis worsened his mental health.

Ye described his bipolar disorder was distorting his mind. “You think everyone else is overreacting,” he wrote, adding that what feels like clarity can actually be a loss of control. He also admits he “deeply regrets” what he said and did during the time he was spiraling.  “I am not a Nazi or an antisemite. I love Jewish people,” Ye wrote. He also apologized to Black supporters, calling the Black community “the foundation of who I am,” and adding, “I love us.”

While Ye’s letter asks for patience and understanding, the social media response seems to be too little too late. Especially when his attacks played out online with names, screenshots, and celebrity families dragged into his meltdown.

During one of his most infamous tweet storms, Ye put his private conflict with then-wife Kim Kardashian on front street, alleging she tried to have him hospitalized. In one post, he wrote: “Kim was trying to fly to Wyoming with a doctor to lock me up like on the movie Get Out…” He also went after Kris Jenner, tweeting: “Kriss don’t play with me you and that calmye are not allowed around my children.”

And in another moment that instantly went viral, he nicknamed her “Kris Jong-Un.”

Ye didn’t just tweet, he posted screenshots of alleged texts, turning a family dispute into public content.

He even targeted Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s twins in a now-deleted post that began: “WAIT HAS ANYONE EVER SEEN JAY Z AND BEYONCES YOUNGER KIDS?” “THEYRE RETARDED NO LIKE LITERALLY AND THIS IS WHY ARTIFICIAL INSEMNATION IS SUCH A BLESSING HAVING RETARDED CHILDREN IS A CHOICE.”

Ye’s new ad may come across to some as a man trying to make amends, but it seems very convenient that it arrives at a time when he is positioning himself for a return to the spotlight, with outlets noting his next album release is in the works.

For many, it’s giving less heartfelt and more like a PR stunt, which, given Ye’s record, wouldn’t be far-fetched. Over the past few years, he has lost multiple deals and major contracts due to his actions.

At this point, the verdict is still out on whether he is being authentic but judging by social media, no one is buying it.
