Michael “5000” Watts, the legendary Houston DJ, producer, and founder of Swishahouse Records, died Friday, his family has confirmed. He was surrounded by loved ones at the time of his passing. His age was not immediately released.

Watts died after developing a fatal heart rhythm known as torsades de pointes, which resulted in sudden cardiac death, according to his representatives. He is survived by his wife, Tammy Watts, five children, and two grandchildren.

A pillar of Houston’s hip-hop community, Watts began his career at just 14 years old and went on to become one of the most influential figures in Southern hip-hop. As the founder and owner of Swishahouse Records, Watts helped popularize the chopped-and-screwed sound and played a key role in elevating the careers of artists including Slim Thug, Paul Wall, and Mike Jones.

Earlier this week, the Watts family had asked the public for prayers after he was hospitalized with serious health complications, requesting limited visitation due to restrictions. The family thanked supporters for the overwhelming love shown during that time.

Details regarding a community event honoring Watts’ legacy will be announced in the coming days through his official social media channels.
