Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Omicron Tau Omega Chapter will host its annual “We Are One” MLK Day of Service on Saturday, January 10, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The event will take place at Bammel Middle School, 16711 Ella Blvd., Houston, TX 77090, and is organized in partnership with Spring Independent School District and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Theta Sigma Chapter.

Organizers describe the effort as a practical way for the community to observe MLK Day through service, aligning with the national call to treat the holiday as “a day on, not a day off.” The drive is designed as a drive-through, drop-off event, allowing supporters to contribute without leaving their vehicles.

This year’s collection will benefit two Houston-area nonprofits working with vulnerable communities. Healing Hearts with Helping Hands, Inc. focuses on supporting young mothers ages 13 to 26, providing baby essentials along with life-skills training and career development resources. Hearts of Rescue serves people experiencing homelessness, offering mobile showers, clean clothing, hygiene kits, and spiritual care.

Requested donation items include diapers (newborn through size 3), baby wipes, backpacks, and sleeping bags. Donations gathered during the event will be delivered directly to the partner organizations to support their ongoing outreach.

“Collaborating with trusted community partners allows us to extend our reach and deepen our impact,” said Yoshida J. Kirkwood, president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Omicron Tau Omega Chapter. “Through service, we honor Dr. King’s legacy by meeting tangible needs and uplifting individuals and families right here in our community.”

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was founded in 1908 at Howard University and is known internationally for its service initiatives. The Omicron Tau Omega Chapter, chartered in Spring, Texas, has a history of community-focused programming in the North Harris County area.
