The National Black Church Initiative, a coalition representing 150,000 African American and Latino faith communities with a combined membership of more than 27 million people, has endorsed New York Assembly member Zohran Mamdani in the upcoming race for mayor of New York City.

NBCI President Rev. Anthony Evans said the organization’s decision was based on Mamdani’s record of advocacy and commitment to economic equity. “For now, Mamdani has clean hands. Therefore, I am urging all my supporters to vote for Zohran Mamdani for the next Mayor of New York,” Evans said in a statement.

Mamdani, who represents parts of Queens in the state Assembly, has built a reputation as a progressive voice focused on housing, workers’ rights, and economic justice. NBCI leaders said they believe his policies would help relieve financial burdens for working families while holding wealthier residents more accountable.

“Zohran Mamdani has proven to be a fighter for all New Yorkers,” the organization said. “He will give New York a fresh start, look out for working families, and ensure that the city’s economic policies work for everyone.”

The National Black Church Initiative is a Washington, D.C.–based coalition that works to address racial disparities in health care, education, housing, technology, and environmental justice. Through partnerships with government agencies and private organizations, NBCI develops faith-based strategies to improve wellness and equity across communities.
