Gene Grant Named Executive Director of New Mexico Office of African American Affairs

Gene Grant, a familiar face to many New Mexicans as the longtime host of PBS’s “New Mexico In Focus,” has been appointed as the new executive director of the New Mexico Office of African American Affairs.
Bringing nearly 20 years of experience in public affairs, community dialogue, and cultural advocacy, Grant steps into a pivotal leadership role focused on uplifting and empowering Black communities across the state. His background combines journalism, legislative policy, nonprofit leadership, and a deep-rooted commitment to representation.
From 2005 to 2023, Grant served as the executive host and editorial lead for “New Mexico In Focus,” where he became known for thoughtful conversations and hard-hitting questions on issues impacting communities statewide. Under his guidance, the show produced numerous specials centered on African American issues and voices in New Mexico. Most recently, he held the position of Chief Program and Policy Officer at Animal Protection New Mexico, where he was recognized for his work in coalition-building, legislative advocacy, and developing initiatives with lasting impact.
In his new role, Grant will oversee the Office of African American Affairs’ mission to enhance economic development, educational attainment, health outcomes, and civic engagement within New Mexico’s Black communities.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham praised Grant’s appointment, stating, “For almost 20 years, Gene Grant has been one of New Mexico’s most trusted voices – asking tough questions, bringing people together and making sure every New Mexican has a seat at the table. He understands the power of representation and he’s spent his career making sure African American voices and stories are front and center in our state.”
For Grant, the position is both a calling and a continuation of the work he’s always championed. “I am deeply honored to serve the African American community and all New Mexicans in this capacity,” he said. “I look forward to working with community leaders, legislators and stakeholders across New Mexico to strengthen our cultural institutions, advance equity and create opportunities for all African Americans to thrive in our state.”
Outside of his public-facing roles, Grant is also a published playwright, cultural critic, and columnist. His dedication to community extends to board service with organizations such as the ACLU of New Mexico, the Vortex Theatre, and Duke City Shootout. He currently resides in Santa Fe.
With this new chapter, Grant brings a legacy of storytelling, advocacy, and leadership to a state office poised to make transformative change.
