The Houston Police Department and Houston Fire Department are mourning the loss of two of their own, who tragically passed away on September 17 while serving in the line of duty.

HPD Senior Police Officer Alex Roberts

The Houston Police Department announced the death of Senior Police Officer Alex Roberts, who was killed following a vehicle crash at about 4:20 p.m. in Anderson County.

Roberts was conducting a traffic escort on his motorcycle when he was struck by another vehicle. The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Department of Public Safety are leading the ongoing investigation.

“Senior Police Officer Roberts faithfully served the Houston Police Department with honor and dedication. His loss is felt deeply within our department and the community he proudly served,” said HPD Police Chief J. Noe Diaz, Jr..

Roberts joined HPD in November 2010 and was assigned to the Traffic Enforcement Division’s Solo Motorcycle Detail. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.

HFD Firefighter Paramedic Stephen Scott

The Houston Fire Department also announced the loss of Stephen Scott, a firefighter paramedic who died Wednesday after suffering an on-duty medical emergency on Sunday.

“Firefighter Scott was a dedicated member of this team, and will be missed by the HFD family,” said Fire Chief Thomas Muñoz. “His legacy is one of hard work, honor, and service to his community.”

Scott joined HFD in 1997 and had served at Station 102 in Kingwood since 2008, previously spending many years at Station 9 on Hogan Street. He also managed HFD’s Base Station services operated by SouthEast Texas Regional Advisory Council (SETRAC), coordinating ambulance patient traffic throughout the Houston region. He is survived by his wife and three adult children.

HFD’s Firefighter Support Network is working with the Scott family, the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association IAFF Local 341, Station 102, and the broader department to ensure the family is supported during this time. The department’s Critical Incident Stress Management program is also available to members affected by his passing.

In honor of Firefighter Scott, all HFD members will wear Class B uniforms with shrouded badges until he is laid to rest. John Whitmire, the Mayor of Houston, has ordered flags at all City facilities to be flown at half-staff until further notice.
