Brooklyn’s own Steven Van Patten brings horror, heritage, and heat to Reimagined BK this Saturday

This Saturday, August 9, acclaimed horror author Steven Van Patten will take over Reimagined BK for a special book signing event that promises chills, conversation, and community.
From 12 PM to 6 PM, fans and curious readers alike are invited to stop by 708 Franklin Avenue, home of the Crown Heights boutique and creative hub, to meet the man behind some of the most imaginative and socially charged horror fiction of our time.
The event is part of the Franklin Avenue Merchants Association’s Open Streets series, a community-driven celebration of arts, culture, and local small businesses. But make no mistake, this is more than just a typical meet-and-greet. It’s a full-circle moment for a Brooklyn native who has carved out a legendary lane in a genre that rarely gives Black creators their flowers.

Known to fans as SVP, Van Patten has built a cult following with his groundbreaking Brookwater’s Curse trilogy. The series reimagines the vampire tale through the eyes of a former Georgia plantation slave turned supernatural lawman. Then there’s Killer Genius, a bold narrative about a modern Black woman using technology and intelligence to take justice into her own hands. Both sagas have earned him multiple African American Literary Awards, including Best Science Fiction and Best Independent Publisher.
And that’s just scratching the surface.
Van Patten has co-authored projects like Hell at the Way Station and Hell at Brooklyn Tea, collaborated with YouTube’s Extra Credit series, and written award-winning sketches like Bandmates, starring TV veterans John Schneider and Max Gail.
His work blends horror, history, and futurism with emotional depth and razor-sharp storytelling. This Saturday, readers get the rare chance to engage with the author in an intimate setting, get books signed, and talk about everything from vampires to vengeance.
A Celebration of Community and Creativity
For Reimagined BK co-owner Theresa Redd, the event is about more than books.
“As a Brooklyn-based business and creative hub, Jeff and I are incredibly proud to host Steven Van Patten’s book signing at Reimagined BK,” Redd said. “Steven is not only a native son of this borough, he’s a longtime supporter of our work and a bold, brilliant voice in horror and speculative fiction. Supporting Black writers, especially in genres where our voices have historically been underrepresented, isn’t just important, it’s necessary. These are the stories that expand the cultural imagination. We’re thrilled to help bring his work to our community right here on Franklin Avenue.”
Whether you are a longtime fan or just discovering his work, this event is the perfect opportunity to connect with one of Brooklyn’s brightest literary stars. Expect good vibes, good conversation, and some seriously good storytelling.
