The 2025 NFL Draft was supposed to be a moment of triumph for Shedeur Sanders — a polished, high-IQ quarterback raised by one of football’s greatest icons.
Instead, it became a painful reminder that for Black athletes, excellence isn’t always enough.

Despite a standout college career under his father, Deion Sanders, Shedeur shockingly fell to the fifth round, picked 144th overall by the Cleveland Browns. His brother, Shilo Sanders, a talented safety, went undrafted before signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The fallout from this perceived slight has ignited outrage across the Black community — and among some of the biggest names in sports.

“It’s a damn disgrace,” thundered ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith. “Shedeur Sanders falling like this? It’s not about ability. It’s about sending a message to Deion Sanders. That’s what this is.”

Smith even compared the situation to the blackballing of Colin Kaepernick, calling it “Kaepernick-level collusion” by NFL owners uncomfortable with Deion’s influence, defiance, and unapologetic Black leadership.

Fox Sports’ Skip Bayless didn’t hold back either, calling it:

“The most stunning and disgusting development in NFL Draft history,”
arguing that Shedeur had every tool — leadership, accuracy, intelligence — that typically fast-tracks white quarterbacks to stardom.

Analyst Joel Klatt also blasted the smear campaign against Shedeur:

“Anonymous scouts criticizing Shedeur’s ‘attitude’ or ‘entitlement’ — that’s lazy and it’s dangerous,” Klatt warned. “We know what those coded words mean.”

A Double Standard on Full Display

At the heart of the backlash is a deeper frustration: the double standard.

When Archie Manning — a respected white NFL quarterback — carefully shaped the careers of his sons Peyton and Eli Manning, advocating for the right system, the right teams, and the right timing, he was celebrated as a wise and protective father.

Like rapper Finesse2Tymes put it:

“It’s cool when they do it, it’s a problem when I [we] do it…”

When Deion Sanders, a Black Hall of Famer, does the same for his sons, it’s viewed with suspicion. Critics call it “overbearing.” NFL owners seem to call it “a threat.”

“Archie could steer Peyton away from the Chargers and no one blinked,” observed one commentator online. “But Deion advocates for his sons, and suddenly the whole league has a problem?”

The deeper implication isn’t just about football.
It’s about who is allowed to have power.
It’s about who is allowed to protect their children without being penalized.

Deion’s Heartfelt Plea: “Put Me on the Cross”

In an emotional moment captured during the family’s livestream, Deion Sanders was heard praying:

“Lord, put me on the cross. Take him off of it. Please take my kids off of it. I got this. I will take it for them.” (Source: 247Sports)

Deion also spoke candidly about the scrutiny their family faced:

“It’s like people are saying, ‘This is enough. I’m sick of dealing with him. Can he go away? Here goes his kid, acting just like him.’ We don’t want to bother anybody. We won’t start it, but we will finish it.” (Source: Fox Sports)

A Confidence Misinterpreted?

In the spirit of fairness, some insiders suggest Shedeur’s draft slide had less to do with race — and more to do with perception during the high-stakes pre-draft interview process.

Veteran NFL reporter Josina Anderson revealed that a quarterbacks coach from a top-seven drafting team described Shedeur Sanders as “brash” and “arrogant” during his combine interview.
Similarly, ESPN’s Todd McShay reported that some teams were turned off by Sanders’ “lack of a professional approach” in interviews. (Sources: Bleacher Report)

For quarterbacks — the public face of a franchise — demeanor, maturity, and leadership presence can weigh just as heavily as physical stats.
Perceived arrogance, fairly or unfairly, can be a red flag.

While Deion’s cockiness was tolerated — even celebrated — during his playing days because he backed it up with multiple Pro Bowls and Super Bowl wins, Shedeur is still unproven at the NFL level.
Some analysts argue that what once seemed like charming bravado in Deion’s era may have come across differently in his son’s.

Shedeur and Shilo: New Beginnings

Despite the controversy, the Sanders brothers are stepping into the NFL with heads high.

  • Shedeur Sanders was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round, where he’ll compete in a quarterback room that may eventually give him a chance to silence the doubters.
  • Shilo Sanders signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent, bringing his hard-hitting style to a team looking to strengthen its secondary.

Both young men carry not just their father’s DNA, but his resilience, his defiance, and his unshakable belief that Black excellence must never bow to anyone’s lowered expectations.
