On Saturday, over 1,000 demonstrators gathered outside Houston City Hall as part of the nationwide “50501 Movement,” protesting against President Donald Trump’s administration and the Project 2025 agenda. The event, organized by the nonpartisan advocacy group 5051 Houston, drew a diverse crowd voicing concerns over immigration policies, federal funding cuts, and perceived government overreach.

Protesters carried signs with messages such as “I’m Tarrified” and “Deport Musk,” referencing tech billionaire Elon Musk’s involvement in the administration’s Department of Government Efficiency. The demonstration aimed to inspire unity and resistance, drawing inspiration from the iconic “Be Someone” graffiti on the Union Pacific railroad bridge just north of downtown.

The Houston protest was one of over 400 events held nationwide on April 19, as part of the 50501 Movement’s goal to hold 50 protests in 50 states. The movement, which began with a protest on February 5, 2025, has grown rapidly through social media, organizing mass demonstrations to oppose the Trump administration’s policies and advocate for the protection of minority rights.

Organizers estimated the crowd at 2,100, surpassing initial expectations. The event featured speeches, performances, and calls to action, encouraging attendees to continue advocating for democratic principles and social justice.

The 50501 Movement plans to continue organizing protests and community events in the coming months, aiming to maintain momentum and public engagement leading up to the 2026 midterm elections.
