This weekend, community members in Spring are invited to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a hands-on day of service designed to uplift children in need. On Saturday, Jan. 11, 2025, from 9 to 11 a.m., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s Omicron Tau Omega Chapter, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.’s Sigma Theta Sigma Chapter, and Spring Independent School District will host “We Are One – MLK Day of Service: A BEAR Necessities Toiletry Drive and Packing Party.”

The event, which will take place at Bammel Middle School, 16711 Ella Blvd., focuses on addressing the needs of children in Child Protective Services by assembling toiletry bags filled with essential items.

With a goal of preparing 350 toiletry bags — and an ambitious stretch goal of 500 — the effort highlights the power of collective action in the community. Organizers are encouraging donations of much-needed items, such as disposable menstrual supplies, including pads, tampons, and panty liners, to ensure the initiative’s success. Attendees of all ages are invited to roll up their sleeves and participate in the packing party, contributing to an effort that reflects the true spirit of service.

“We acknowledge the importance of collaborating with significant community organizations to accomplish our mission of serving all humanity and safeguarding the well-being of children in the north Houston area and beyond,” said Yoshida J. Kirkwood, president of the Omicron Tau Omega Chapter. “I express gratitude to our chapter members, volunteers, and community supporters for their dedication and contributions, which will contribute to the success of this initiative.”

The event aligns with the mission of MLK Day, the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service. Observed on the third Monday of January, MLK Day calls on Americans to volunteer in their communities to honor Dr. King’s legacy of activism and civic engagement.

The initiative will benefit Be A Resource Houston, a nonprofit organization supporting children in need. For more information, visit bearesourcehouston.org.
