President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Houston billionaire Tilman Fertitta as the next U.S. ambassador to Italy.

Fertitta, 67, is the owner of the NBA’s Houston Rockets and chairman of Landry’s, Inc., a hospitality conglomerate encompassing over 600 restaurants, hotels, and casinos nationwide.

Announcing the nomination on his Truth Social platform, Trump praised Fertitta as “an accomplished businessman” whose extensive experience in the hospitality industry positions him well to strengthen U.S.-Italy relations.

Fertitta’s appointment is pending Senate confirmation.

Born and raised in Galveston, Texas, Fertitta has deep roots in the Houston area. He purchased the Houston Rockets in 2017 for a then-record $2.2 billion, further solidifying his commitment to the city’s sports and business communities.

Beyond his business ventures, Fertitta is known for his philanthropic efforts, including significant contributions to educational institutions and healthcare initiatives in Houston. His leadership as chairman of the University of Houston System’s Board of Regents has been instrumental in advancing the university’s mission and growth.

Fertitta’s nomination comes as part of a series of appointments by President-elect Trump, who has been selecting individuals with substantial business backgrounds for key diplomatic positions. If confirmed, Fertitta will serve in Rome, working alongside Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to enhance diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.
