It’s no secret that we’re in an era where social media drives the storylines, and today’s celebrities live in a space where everything is a trend—including their relationship ups and downs. Recently, Skai Jackson, Keke Palmer, and Halle Bailey have made headlines for “baby daddy drama,” sparking conversations on self-worth and empowerment for young women today. But how did we get here, where personal drama is public, and why is it trending as if it’s the latest reality show episode?

Think back to when we had legends like Aretha Franklin, whose classic “Respect” was a blueprint for self-worth, and Lauryn Hill, who reminded us with “That Thing” to value ourselves in a culture that often doesn’t.

Those songs were more than just hits—they were lessons. Today, it feels like young women lack the same substance to draw from. Sure, we’ve got WAP, and don’t get it twisted—WAP is a bop. And yes, we all had our “Back That Thang Up” moments in the 2000s. But back then, the music wasn’t just about a good time; it was also about a strong foundation of knowing who you are.

What has taken the place of those messages? Reality TV and OnlyFans are the new “normal,” with The Real Housewives and Bad Girls Club becoming staples of our pop culture. Ratchet culture is cool—it’s the theme of the decade. There’s no judgment; if anything, it’s entertainment. But are young women finding real value in the examples they see? Social Media seems to think that there is a cultural shift that needs to be brought to the forefront with many weighing in.

One user wrote “Successful Black girls it’s time we sit and have a talk that y’all not ready to have… Skai Jackson is the last straw for me.” Another chimed in “Keke Palmer, Halle Bailey & Skai Jackson have bad discernment. How you that successful, have that much potential & let a losers knock you up. And idc how much money one of the BD’s has or how famous he is. Your mindset & behavior can make u a loser.”

In August 2024, former Disney Channel star Skai Jackson was arrested for misdemeanor domestic battery following an altercation with her boyfriend at Universal CityWalk in Hollywood. Security footage reportedly showed Jackson pushing her boyfriend multiple times, leading to her arrest. Both parties denied any physical altercation, claiming they were happily engaged and expecting a child. Following the incident, Jackson faced public scrutiny, with some social media users questioning her actions and character. In response, she shared a TikTok video emphasizing the importance of independence, stating, “Never depend on a man for anything.”

Keke Palmer, who is also a former Disney star, actress and singer, has faced significant personal challenges in her relationship with Darius Jackson, the father of her son, Leodis. In November 2023, Palmer was granted a temporary restraining order against Jackson after alleging multiple instances of physical and emotional abuse throughout their two-year relationship. She also sought sole custody of their then 8-month-old son. In her filing, Palmer detailed incidents where Jackson allegedly trespassed into her home, physically attacked her, and destroyed personal property. She expressed deep concern for her and her son’s safety, stating, “Leo is the most important thing in the entire world to me; he needs and deserves to be safe and grow up in an environment free from violence.”

Jackson responded by filing his own request for a domestic violence restraining order against Palmer, claiming she was the primary aggressor in their relationship. He alleged multiple instances of physical and verbal abuse by Palmer. After a six-month mediation process, the former couple reached a joint custody agreement for their son. Palmer reflected on the tumultuous period, acknowledging the emotional and physical hardships and emphasizing the importance of walking away from unhealthy situations.

And although Halle Bailey and DDG, whose real name is Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr., seem to be the most mature of the couples, they have had their share of public disputes and scrutiny. Sometimes coming across as the young Whitney and Bobby— in the sense that she is the perfect rising star and he is no less than a Youtuber who isn’t worthy of her.

Bailey, acclaimed for her role in The Little Mermaid, and rapper DDG., welcomed their son, Halo, in December 2023. The couple announced their separation in October 2024 but committed to co-parenting their child. In November 2024, tensions arose when DDG appeared on a late-night Twitch livestream hosted by Kai Cenat, featuring their 10-month-old son, Halo, without Bailey’s prior knowledge or consent.

Bailey, who was out of town at the time, expressed her frustration on social media, stating, “I wasn’t told or notified and I am extremely upset to have my baby in front of millions of people.”DDG responded by defending Bailey, acknowledging the challenges she might be facing and emphasizing the importance of mutual respect in their co-parenting journey. He stated, “She could be going through something mentally after having a kid that I can’t understand as a man.”

When Skai, Keke, and Halle find themselves in relationship drama, it doesn’t just stay their drama. Social media amplifies these stories, turning them into trends, and young people are watching. How we talk about these stories and the way we support (or critique) them matters. Instead of dismissing these stories as just “tea,” what if we use them as a chance to have real conversations? Conversations that remind our young women to know their worth, to set boundaries, and to demand respect in every relationship.

Let’s face it: in a culture obsessed with the “ratchet,” we’ve got to remind ourselves of the worth that legends like Aretha and Lauryn laid out for us. Sure, times have changed, but maybe some messages should stay timeless.
