Richard Reyes, affectionately known as Pancho Claus, has been a beacon of joy in Houston for over four decades, delivering Christmas gifts to thousands of children in low-income neighborhoods. This year, however, Reyes’ health challenge threatens to disrupt this cherished tradition.
At 73, Reyes recently suffered his third heart attack and was scheduled for surgery on Monday. Despite this setback, his commitment to bringing holiday cheer remains unwavering as he aims to distribute 20,000 toys to children in Houston and the Rio Grande Valley this Christmas season.
“I want my community to know they are Pancho Claus, and I need them to step up to reach the goal,” Reyes expressed from his hospital bed.

Reyes’ journey as Pancho Claus began in 1981 when he wrote a play titled “Pancho Claus,” a Chicano adaptation of “The Night Before Christmas.” The character, adorned in a red zoot suit and fedora, became a symbol of hope and joy, especially in Houston’s East End.
