Mariah Carey, the queen of holiday hits and vocal runs, is currently navigating the profound grief of losing both her mother, Patricia, and her estranged sister, Alison, on the same day.

According to sources, Mariah didn’t have any contact with Alison before she passed. Instead, she spent her last moments with their mother, Patricia, who was a Juilliard-trained opera singer who trained Mariah and nurtured her talents.

In a statement, Mariah shared, “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.” she continued. “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” adds Mariah. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Patricia was 87 and had a long career as a vocal coach. She was married to Mariah’s dad, Alfred Roy Carey, but they split when Mariah was just three.

In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, she talked about how her relationship with her mom was anything but simple. “Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment,” she wrote.  “I do believe she did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”

As for her sister Alison, things were messy. They were estranged for years, and Alison even sued Mariah in 2021, claiming the singer aired out too much dirty laundry in her memoir. Mariah didn’t bother responding to the lawsuit, which just shows how deep the rift was between them.

Mariah’s got one other sibling, her brother Morgan, who’s also grieving the loss of their mom. This is a heavy time for Mariah, as she tries to juggle the public spotlight and the private pain of losing two close family members. While she’s always been known for her resilience, this is a challenge like no other, and she’s leaning on her fans and close ones for support during this tough time.
