Tyler Perry calls critics “Highbrow Negroes” claps back at backlash over new movie

Screenwriter, Director, and Actor Tyler Perry clapped back at critics during a recent podcast interview with actress KeKe Palmer where he addressed those who say his films perpetuate negative Black stereotypes and aren’t realistic.
The recent backlash comes after Perry’s recent film “Divorce In the Black” opening scene depicts a funeral where a mother who is burying her son has a screaming match with the pastor and first lady before taking off her clothing and directing her other children to pull her deceased child out of the casket to prove that she doesn’t need any handouts from the church.
"Divorce In The Black"
This is an awful movie. Story wasn't good, blah cast, acting atrocious, terrible direction. This is a typical Tyler Perry film. Abused woman, bad guy, better man ends up with the woman.

Perry, 54, has received backlash for his films for over a decade but he made it clear to Palmer that he has had enough, by sharing, “You’ve got this ‘highbrow Negro’ who is all up in the air with his nose up looking at everything, and then you got people like where I come from and me who are grinders who really know what it’s like.”
He went on to state that despite the negativity there are many people who appreciate his films and thank him for writing stories that resonate with them.

“I know for a fact that I am doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing. Because for everyone who is a critic, I have thousands of emails from people who say this changed my life. Oh my God, you know me, Oh my God you saved my life, how did you know this about my life and my family? So that is important to me.”
Perry went on to explain that he writes for the disenfranchised who can’t afford to go to therapy. He then became visibly upset telling Palmer that you can’t discount the stories and journeys of these individuals “by saying which Black stories are more important and should or shouldn’t be told, you can get out of here with that bull sh**.”
Despite Perry’s candor, his critics are still coming for him on social media sharing their opinions and asking him to give other writers a chance to help him elevate. They have even gone as far as to create parody films poking fun at the subject manner and dialogue.

I hear this but even when reading, authors have a style/genre that they stick to. I’ve never seen a science fiction writer suddenly do autobiographies. It isn’t an issue because there are endless books in the library to chose from. Tyler catches heat because he is the only one.
