Last year, as we closed out Black History Month, we were saying “Happy 100th Birthday” to Mrs. Ida Mae Ellison. This year, however, we are saying our final farewells to the sassy Houston resident who died just 19 days shy of turning 101.

Her devoted granddaughter, Sabrina Lott, posted news of her passing via Facebook.

“It is my honor to announce the home going of my amazing Grandmother- Ida Mae Ellison. Though my humanness is greatly saddened and my heart, a little more fractured, my spirit soars as she is welcomed to rest in the arms of Father God. She left us, this afternoon, peacefully, in her sleep,” the post read.

One thing is for certain, Mrs. Ida was blessed with a “life well-lived” and was surrounded with love.

Bayou Beat News was honored to feature her in a previous article.

Ida Mae was born to Elton and Lorene Porter in Gonzalez, Texas on Feb. 22, 1922.

After grade school, she attended Prairie View A&M University, where she obtained her cosmetology license. She then moved back to Gonzalez and started her own popular beauty salon – Ida’s Beauty Salon – which was built in her parent’s backyard by her father.

She married Willie B. Lott and had her first son, Willie C. Lott, who became a Major in the United States Army and an architectural engineer for DuPont.

Later, she married Charles Ellison, also from Gonzalez, and gained a “bonus daughter,” Mary Richard. Together, they had a son, Carl Ellison, who became a mortician.

A few years ago, Mrs. Ellison moved to Houston to live with her son Willie and his wife, Jereland Lott, after rehabbing from a fall.

She then moved to live independently at Mason Creek Transitional Care of Katy, where she enjoyed playing bingo and talking with her friends.

Last year, she was surrounded by the amazing caregivers at Mason Creek, her fellow residents and loved ones as a grand birthday party was thrown in her honor for officially becoming a centenarian – 100 years old.

Everyone who knew her praised the “sassy senior” for how she handled herself,

We should all be so lucky to live a long and healthy life — and with such fantastic hair!

Rest in peace Mrs. Ida Mae Ellison, may flights of angels sing thee to thy final rest.
