On October 14, Dannette Davis, founder of Kay Davis in the Community, and local city officials hosted a photo exhibit showcase and held a community roundtable discussion in observance of what would have been George Floyd’s 49th birthday.

“The Unveiling 5/25/22” exhibit showcased photos from the George Floyd statue unveiling and a sneak preview of the “permanent marker” provided by Harris County.

“The response to George’s death became the beacon to have laws changed in our criminal justice system and spurred conversations on race that were desperately needed in modern day society,” said Davis. “The permanent marker that will be placed alongside George’s statue at Tom Bass Park will provide a constant reminder of who he was and what his story has meant to everyone.”

The panel discussion, which was hosted by Missouri City councilmember Jeffrey L. Boney, included an interactive conversation with Pure Justice, The Texas Organizing Project and NAACP President, Bishop James Dixon.

Prior to the panel discussion, Davis honored local Houston community leaders at a VIP reception. Honorees included Harris County Commissioner, Precinct One, Rodney Ellis; C-Stem Founder, Dr.  Reagan Flowers; Art Consultant, Robert Hodge; Bishop James Dixon II, and Dr. Carolyn Shabazz, City Council Member District D.

“It is not every day that a busy person will take time out of their day and work diligently to make sure that others reach their goals and assist where possible,” Davis said. “It’s important that I acknowledge all of the exceptional leaders and to make it known how much we appreciate these leaders who fought to place a George Floyd Statue in our community to remind us of his sacrifice and the change it brought about.”

Davis explained that her company’s events help scholarship programs and art initiatives in underserved communities.
