The woman many consider to be the greatest of all time (GOAT) tennis player, Serena Williams, announced Tuesday that she’s walking away from the sport after competing in the U.S. Open.

Williams, who said that she is in the midst of a “transition” told fans in an essay posted by Vogue that she has never liked the word “retirement” because it doesn’t feel like a modern word to her.

However, she made it very clear that she’s decided to leave the sport she’s dominated for decades.

In an Instagram post, she wrote, “There comes a time in life when we have to decide to move in a different direction. That time is always hard when you love something so much. My goodness do I enjoy tennis. But now, the countdown has begun. I have to focus on being a mom, my spiritual goals and finally discovering a different, but just exciting Serena. I’m gonna relish these next few weeks.”

Williams said she never wanted to have to choose between tennis and her family, but feels that she is making the right choice.
