Since Lizzo appeared in the music scene, she’s been all about being your most authentic self and has been one of the loudest voices advocating for body positivity. This week, Lizzo announced that she’s taking her message of self-love a bit further with her own shapewear line and partnership with Fabletics.

Lizzo shared her experiences with corsets and girdles growing up, and it was harmful for both her body and how she perceived herself.

“It was a really painful, shameful experience … because I grew up in a society where as soon as I was aware of it, I was made to feel ashamed of how I looked,” said the award-winning artist and Detroit native.

Lizzo eventually started embracing her natural body, and thus began her journey to body positivity.

“I got to a point where I was like, ‘F–k that,’” Lizzo said. “I stopped wearing bras even. I went all the way to the other side, to liberate myself and find my self-love and body positivity.”

Lizzo then started exploring and experimenting with her own version of shapewear.

“I started to have fun with creating different shapes and silhouettes and looks and realized, ‘Oh, this is actually not a bad thing if I’m not doing something bad to my body,’” she recalled.

The brand name, Yitty, is a personal one, stemming from Lizzo’s childhood.

“Yitty is a nickname my auntie gave me when I was young. She was a full-figured woman and one of the coolest people ever with bold, beautiful energy. I wanted that energy in this brand,” shared Lizzo.

Lizzo is not only changing the shapewear game with inclusivity in sizes and shaping, but she doesn’t want shapewear to be something to be ashamed of. That’s why the launch of her brand consists bright and bold colors and patterns. Lizzo also shared that she is as much the founder as she is the face of Yitty.

“I see every fabric, I pick every color, I’ve tried on every piece a ton of times throughout the design and fitting process.”

Yitty will make its debut on April 12th, in Fabletics stores, and although some of the pieces can be used for athletic wear, an athletic wear collection is in the works.

Prices range from $14.95 to $69.95 and sizes go from XS to 6X.

“More than a product this is about the mentality of having liberation,” the singer said. “The way that we feel about ourselves and the way that we dress ourselves, every day, it doesn’t have to be painful and it doesn’t have to be shameful. It can be fun and exciting and sexy.”

“I want anyone who hears about Yitty — who’s a fan of me — to know that this is not an invitation to change something about yourself in a negative way,” Lizzo added. “This is come as you are. And if something doesn’t feel comfortable, don’t wear it. Don’t do it.”
