After months of teasing his performance at RodeoHouston, Bun B, Houston Hip Hop royalty, delivered. Bun B, former member of the UGK duo, made history as the first local Black man to perform at RodeoHouston.

Bun B’s performance, dubbed the “H-Town Takeover”, was a tribute to Houston music and culture. The rapper called the performance “the Mount Rushmore of Houston music” weeks before the show.

The lineup featured more than a dozen acts, including Houston heroes such as Lil KeKe, Slim Thug, Paul Wall, and The Geto Boys.

Bun B first led the crowd through “Draped Up” and “You’re Everything” followed by Slim Thug and his single “Thug”. Paul Wall and Big Pokey teamed up for “Sittin Sideways”, followed by Paul Wall and Slim Thug’s “Still Tippin”.

Chamillionaire, who was unannounced to the crowd, performed his hit “Ridin”.

By the time it got to the middle of the high-energy performance, the “H-Town Takeover” was in full effect with bright candy-colored slabs circling the stage and Houston classics like “The Way We Ball” and “Sunshine” performed by Lil Flip, and “Southside” performed by Lil KeKe.

Houston R&B also took the stage by storm with performances by HTown (Knocking Boots), Frankie J and Baby Bash (“Suga Suga”); and Letoya Luckett (Torn).

“This ain’t Versuz, and this ain’t the Super Bowl. This is the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, baby,” Bun said. Tears streamed down his face as he was joined by his musical family for a final farewell.
