By now, videos of Ukraine forces violently preventing African and other non-white students from fleeing the country have circulated around social media. African countries have had little power in ensuring the safety of their students in Ukraine and it has been reported that as of now, 5 people have died from the freezing temperatures.

Korrine Sky, one of the three women who led the fundraiser for African students, managed to flee Ukraine after an intense struggle. She was studying in the city of Dnipro when Russia attacked.

Sky documented her journey on social media as her and other students struggled to leave Ukraine.

After seeing Sky’s struggle through social media, London-native Patricia Daley and her friend Tokunbo Koiki, offered to assist Sky. The three women launched a campaign to assist Black and other students of color who were unable to leave due to the color of their skin.

The women say they’ve helped 500 students safely cross Ukraine’s border through “funding transport costs, like arranging taxis and other emergency needs.”

“People said they were pushed, sent back, and physically assaulted on both sides of the border in Ukraine, Romania, and Poland,” Koiki said.
