Janet Jackson is arguably one of the most iconic and influential female artist to date. She is responsible for changing the trajectory of music made by many female artists today. Though her artistry is widely revered and rivals that of her brother, the global phenomenon Michael Jackson, Janet has always led a very private life away from the press. That all changes in her newest documentary JANET, which tells all about Jackson’s relationship with her legendary family, becoming an icon, and motherhood.

Jackson dropped the first full trailer for the documentary on New Year’s Day. The four hour special will air over two days starting on January 28th on Lifetime and A&E. The documentary commemorates the 40th anniversary of Jackson’s debut album.

“You’ve been very private about your personal life up until now. Why did you want to do this documentary?” Janet is asked in the clip before responding, “It’s just something that needs to be done.”
