These days it seems that anybody can become famous and successful from disrespecting Black people and culture. Hell, even the NAACP awards just about anybody for minstrel behavior, and that anybody is actress Awkwafina.

Awkwafina, and Asian-American actress is well-known for her consistent use of a Blaccent. For those of you who don’t know, a Blaccent is a stereotypical accent that non-black people use when trying to portray aspects of Black American culture. It has no regard for region, slang, or dialect of AAVE (African American Vernacular English) it is strictly for minstrel purposes.

Awkwafina was nominated by the NAACP Image awards for “Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance” for her role in Disney’s Ray and the Last Dragon.

The actress shared that she was “Extremely honored to be nominated at the @naacp image awards, alongside so many people I love, appreciate and respect.” She added, “Thank you @naacp for all that you do and have done.”

She has yet to address her Blaccent, which has always received major backlash from Black Twitter, besides mentioning that she was “open to the conversation” in an interview with Reuters Showbiz.

We don’t think it’s that “multifaceted and layered” at all.

What’s most interesting is how strongly Awkwafina feels against today’s Asian representation in Hollywood while seeing nothing wrong with profiting from making a minstrel out of Black people.

“”I’ve walked out of auditions where the casting director all of a sudden changed her mind and asked for accents. I refuse to do accents,” she said in a 2017 interview with VICE.

“And I think like–so far, like a lot of the parts I’ve gone out for have been really real characters and being Asian is not part of their plot line. I’m OK with having an Asian aspect if it’s done in a genuine way. I’m not OK with someone writing the Asian experience for an Asian character. Like that’s annoying and I make it very clear, I don’t ever go out for auditions where I feel like I’m making a minstrel out of our people.”

Thank you NAACP Image Awards, for showing us that the advancement of people of color in film and television comes at the mockery and expense of Black people.
