The 79th annual Golden Globes ceremony will not air on live television on January 9th 2022. NBC announced the decision back in May after the Los Angeles Times exposed the HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association) for its lack of inclusivity, reporting that there were zero Black members of the association.

The HFPA is made up of 87 journalists from different countries who decide the nominees and winners of the Golden Globes awards. These nominations are often early predictions of winners of the Oscars. This puts into perspective why it’s important to have Black members of the HFPA, not only because diversity should be the norm in 2021, but because without it, many Black creatives do not get the nominations and wins they deserve.

Despite the failures of the organization, this year’s class of nominees is nothing short of amazing.

King Richard is a major front-runner for the film category, also producing Will Smith for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama”, Aunjanue Ellis for “Best Supporting Actress”, and Beyoncé’s “Be Alive” for “Best Original Song”.

Issa Rae lands her third Golden Globes nomination for “Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Series” along with Tracee Ellis Ross for Black-ish. Anthony Anderson serves as Ross’ counterpart for the “Best Television Actor, Musical or Comedy Series” nominees.
