It is official. Hollywood heavyweight Matthew McConaughey will be sticking to what he does best – acting – and has decided not to run for governor of Texas.

The A-list celebrity, known for his signature “alright, alright, alright” phrase, announced the big news on Twitter Sunday evening.

In a video posted to his Twitter account, McConaughey, who lives in Austin, said he was honored to be considered for “political leadership.”

“In over the past two years, I have been working on the answer to the question of how I can be most useful in this life going forward. Useful to myself, useful to my family, and to the most amount of people,” he said. “One category of service I have been exploring is politics. I have been considering a run for governor of Texas. I’ve been listening, I’ve been learning, measuring. I’ve been studying Texas politics and American politics.”

McConaughey went on to say the gubernatorial run was an “humbling and inspiring path to ponder,” adding, “it is also a path that I’m choosing not to take at this moment.”

McConaughey’s announcement came just over two weeks before the candidate filing deadline for the Texas primary.

His decision comes as quite a shock for some, because some earlier polls showed he would have been a force to be reckoned with, leading Abbott in a head-to-head matchup.

Gov. Abbott, who is seeking his third term next year, may still have his work cut out for him because — let’s not forget — Beto O’Rourke launched his campaign against Abbott earlier this month.
