Halle Bailey has finally finished filming the highly anticipated live action remake of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Bailey being chosen for the lead back in July 2019 sparked loads of both backlash and support.

“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” the film’s director, Rob Marshall (Chicago), said in a statement at the time.

Bailey is half of duo ChloexHalle, signed to Beyonce’s record label Parkwood Entertainment, and anyone who’s heard her sing knows that she has a perfect Disney princess voice. The backlash came mainly from white viewers who implied she got the role only because she is Black, not because she was the best fit for the role.

The 21-year-old singer and actress posted a picture of herself in what looked like a mermaid outfit on the shores of Italy against a sunset. It was as Disney as you could get.

“And just like that..that’s a wrap ❤️after auditioning for this film when i was 18 just about to turn 19 , to now finishing filming through a pandemic when i turned 21 ..we have finally made it…?,” she wrote in the caption.

“I feel so grateful to have experienced this film in all of its glory..it has been the toughest experience being away from everything and everyone i’ve ever known, to feeling self doubt/ loneliness, but also feeling such freedom and perseverance as i’ve reached the end,” Bailey wrote. “This experience has made me so much stronger than i ever thought i could be.”

The remake also stars Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric.

The release date has yet to be revealed.
