If you’re anything like me, you’ve been driven mad by the four corners of your room. You’ve binge-watched every show on Netflix, your house is full of DIY projects, and you just can’t bear the thought of spending your summer at home. But don’t fret, with the widespread distribution of the  COVID-19 vaccine, the world is finally opening up. Many of us are still anxious and unsure about leaping back into society, especially because we’re not in the clear yet. So as we gradually integrate ourselves into life before COVID, here are some fun and safe outing ideas. Summer is here, Texas is open, let’s get busy.

If you’re still wary about air travel, consider taking a road trip down I-45 to beautiful Lake Conroe. Enjoy swimming, fishing, kayaking and so much more without worrying about crowded spaces. Head into downtown Conroe to experience live music and fine dining.

Children’s Museum of Houston

Get your tickets ready because the Children’s Museum is reopening on June 8th. It’s been a difficult year and a half for children, and the numerous exhibits and play areas are just what your child needs. The Children’s Museum will require everyone, ages 2 and up, to wear masks. Tickets must be ordered online, and a cleaning crew will disinfect high-touch areas to keep you and your tyke worry-free.

The Houston Zoo

The Houston Zoo has something for the entire family to enjoy. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the newest baby elephant, Teddy.  Tickets have to be purchased online and visitors must arrive at their reserved time. While the Houston Zoo will not require guests to wear a face mask, social distancing and masks are strongly encouraged for those who are unvaccinated.

Drive-In Movie Theatre

Looking for the perfect date idea this summer? Look no further than the drive-in movie theater. Moonstruck Drive-In, is Houston’s newest permanent drive-in theater and will be showing newly released films all summer. Enjoy a romantic evening with your crush while catching a great film and staying safe from COVID in your own vehicle. Get your popcorn ready!

Miller Outdoor Theatre

While most of us have been focusing on crafting the perfect playlist during the pandemic, nothing beats the live music experience. The Miller Outdoor Theatre has a calendar full of live music events, including performances by The Ernest Walker Band, a live band that demonstrates the evolution of African American music from Rhythm and Blues to Hip Hop and so much more. Masks are required and temperatures will be checked at the entrance.

Weekend Brunch

There is nothing like a weekend brunch after a hard week of work. If you’re looking for good food and live entertainment, Phil & Derek’s restaurant is the place for you. While the restaurant is open seven days a week, creole-cajun-styled brunch is served from 10 in the morning to 4 in the evening on Saturday and Sunday with live bands and comedy shows. There is now an open deck that serves drinks and appetizers as well. You won’t be disappointed with this Black-owned restaurant. Masks are required and temperatures will be checked upon entrance.
