President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris aren’t wasting any time when it comes to addressing the Coronavirus.

Biden and Harris released a statement Monday, to announce the new COVID-19 Advisory Council. “Dealing with the coronavirus pandemic is one of the most important battles our administration will face, and I will be informed by science and by experts,” said President-elect Biden. “The advisory board will help shape my approach to managing the surge in reported infections; ensuring vaccines are safe, effective, and distributed efficiently, equitably, and free; and protecting at-risk populations.”

The board will be co-chaired by Dr. David Kessler, former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton and currently a professor at University of California San Francisco; Dr. Vivek Murthy, former Surgeon General under Barack Obama and Trump; and Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith, associate dean for health equity research at Yale School of Medicine.

Biden says while his priority is stopping COVID-19 he will also be focused on relief for families, racial tension, and opening schools. “To determine the public health and economic steps necessary to get the virus under control, to deliver immediate relief to working families, to address ongoing racial and ethnic disparities, and to reopen our schools and businesses safely and effectively.”

New cases are rising in at least 40 states, with more than 9.3 million total infections and more than 236,000 deaths.
