Chrissy Teigen and John Legend made a heartbreaking announcement late Wednesday from the hospital where their third child died from medical complications within moments of his birth.

In a heart-wrenching Instagram post, Teigen explained the baby suffered excessive bleeding despite multiple blood transfusions.

“We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough,” Teigen said about the pregnancy loss.

Earlier in the week, Teigen posted she had experienced a serious blood clot that nearly threatened her life. The couple was in panic as doctors scrambled to find the child’s heartbeat, but it seemed the crisis had been averted.

Several painful photos showed the couple mourning from a hospital bed following the loss of their baby, who they had lovingly called “Jack” throughout the pregnancy.

“We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before.”

She said naming their children was a ritual they had always reserved until birth. Teigen and Legend are parents to daughter Luna Simone, 4, and son Miles Theodore, 2.

“We never decide on our babies’ names until the last possible moment after they’re born, just before we leave the hospital.  But we, for some reason, had started to call this little guy in my belly Jack.  So he will always be Jack to us.  Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever.”

The announcement has left the world in shock. In response, fans and other celebrities flooded social media with uplifting messages and condolences.

Of course, none matching the sadness of Teigen’s own condolences to her child.

“To our Jack – I’m so sorry that the first few moments of your life were met with so many complications, that we couldn’t give you the home you needed to survive. We will always love you,” she said.

It’s a difficult and dark time for them, but Teigen said they’re grateful for the overwhelming love and support. Many fans look to the couple’s family as the ideal of a loving marriage and good parenting.

“We are so grateful for the life we have, for our wonderful babies Luna and Miles, for all the amazing things we’ve been able to experience,” Teigen said. “But everyday can’t be full of sunshine.  On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it.”
