DC Comics has announced the addition of its first black “Batwoman” character.

CW39 revealed that the new character will appear on Season 2 of the Batwoman series, starting January 2021.

Actress Javicia Leslie has been cast in the role of Ryan Wilder, whose alter ego is Batwoman.

Leslie took to social media to share her excitement with her fans. “Blackwoman, I mean Batwoman is here!” the 33-year-old wrote.

The former “God Friended Me” cast member also detailed the importance of her costume in a recent interview with Hello Beautiful.

“I love the fact that Ryan is becoming her own Batwoman — it’s her style, her swag, and her moment,” said Leslie. “It was an honor to be able to collaborate with Caroline and Maya. I felt it was important that viewers could tell by the silhouette that Batwoman was a Black girl. With the form-fitting suit and beautiful Afro, we definitely nailed it!”

The new re-designed ‘Batsuit’ was conceptualized by Batwoman costume designer Maya Mani, and created by Ocean Drive Leather. The wig was created by Janice Workman.

Leslie is definitely the personification of Black excellence and female empowerment in the new role.

Now let’s set our sights on a Black Wonder Woman, or maybe even a Black Superwoman.
